Level 1

includes more than 30 exercises which you’ll use over 4 fortnights.

Sensory Processing, this exercise addresses specifically the processing of movement. The processing of movement is essential for

  • posture,
  • balance,
  • sport skills and also for
  • the ability to sit still.

Level 1 addresses the processing of different sensations, including

  • movement,
  • touch,
  • hearing and listening,
  • vision and eye movements,
  • smell and taste.

Knee soccer can be played with one parent or with the rest of the family and more friends.

Level 2

includes more than 40 exercises to be used over 4 fortnights.

Sensory motor skills form the foundation of many other skills. During these 4 fortnights we focus on

  • muscle tone,
  • body awareness,
  • core muscle strength,
  • balance and
  • aspects of locomotion.

Standing heel-to-toe for 10 seconds. Through these 8 weeks we gradually increase the expectations and thus the child develops and will be able to do more difficult exercises. This is an example of stationary balance.  We also include exercises for dynamic balance (balance in movement) and of course many more to address the other skills mentioned in the description of the Level 2.

Level 3

includes more than 30 exercises to be used over 4 fortnights

Brain bridging is an important part of the sensory motor skills. It encourages the two sides of the body to work together and to communicate with each other. It also encourages the two hemispheres of the brain to communicate. Effective brain bridging has a positive effect on the ability to

  • perform sequences of movement,
  • rhythm,
  • concept of direction,
  • cope with routines,
  • learn to spell,
  • construct a sentence, and to
  •  understand aspects of Mathematics.

During these 16 weeks we also address

  • body concepts and
  • oral motor skills, which are tongue and mouth movement, essential for speech, chewing and swallowing.

Jump open and close is an exercise that involves both sides of the body. It also encourages the child to listen and to react on a sound. The exercise is performed on a fairly slow rhythm as it is surprisingly more difficult for a child to follow a slow rhythm than a fast one where they can actually trick you in doing the movements haphazardly.

Level 4

Includes more than 30 exercises to be used over 4 fortnights

Level 4 continues to address sensory motor skills and brain bridging at more advanced levels.
Exercises include

  • crossing over movements
  • bilateral movements
  • advanced balance
  • rhythm
  • listening
  • more oral motor and
  • begin to address eye hand coordination and motor planning

Listen and react encourages the child to listen and to react with either the left or the right side, depending on the sound.

Level 5

Includes more than 30 exercises to be used over 4 fortnights

Level 5 builds on the skills that your child has developed during the last 3 levels.  All exercises are at more advanced levels and include:

  • body image,
  • posture fine tuning
  • balance fine tuning
  • longer sequences of movements
  • working from a 3 dimensional level to a 2 dimensional level
  • motor planning
  • and we begin to help the child with ideation.

Count in two’s with arm raises encourages the integration of many skills, such as

  • balance,
  • sequencing,
  • listening and
  • rhythm.

The younger child might have difficulty with the concept of counting in two’s but it is then the ideal opportunity to explain this concept to your child and to ensure that your child has the skills to understand time tables.

Level 6

Includes more than 20 exercises to be used over 3 fortnights

The exercises and activities of Level 6 are at advanced levels. Level 6 focuses on

  • motor planning
  • ideation
  • auditory and visual sequences
  • writing and reading of numbers and letters
  • sequential memory
  • 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional tasks.

Write and read in 3’s. This activity encourages the child to read numbers and to write numbers in a sequence.

Level 7

Includes more than 20 exercises to be used over 3 fortnights

The activities of Level 7 builds on the skills developed in Levels 1 – 6. This is about advanced skills to bridge the gap from sensory motor skills to classroom work. We also address some skills not focused on in previous levels, such as

  • Emotions
  • Memory
  • Visualization
  • Fine coordination.

Sequences of letters, numbers and shapes. This activity encourages memory. Each child will have a different ability and the parent can easily adapt this exercise to the level of the child. And then encourage the child to gradually do more advanced work.

Level 8

Includes more than 15 exercises to be used over 1 fortnight

Level 8 is the “wrap up” of the program and includes many activities over all the important aspects of development.  Exercises include

  • Sequences
  • Patterns
  • Posture when sitting at the table
  • Cutting
  • Analysis and synthesis.

This is the last fortnight of the program and leaves you with a large library of activities to use over 3 years with one child and with siblings.

Shoe laces. This activity is one that many children struggle with. However, when your child has developed through the seven previous levels, it should be easy to do. Tying shoe laces is a complex task that is built on skills such as sequencing, patterns, fine motor coordination and motor planning. By the time your child reaches Level 8 of CoordiChild, he or she should find it a breeze!
